Ontario Chamber of Commerce Perspective on Federal Budget

Today, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) released Vote Prosperity, outlining business priorities for the 2022 provincial election. Read the release.

The next four years will be critical to determining the future of Ontario’s business community and overall economic success. Short-term measures must be balanced with long-term investments to fuel predictability and economic growth.

Business competitiveness results in more prosperous communities, higher consumer confidence, high-quality jobs, and a more resilient economy. This requires:

  • Boosting confidence and predictability
  • Implementing pro-growth policies
  • Building resilient communities
  • Supporting entrepreneurship and innovation

The recommendations outlined in OCC’s Vote Prosperity were developed together with businesses, associations, post-secondary institutions, as well as chambers of commerce and boards of trade from across the province.

Join us for an important discussion about the importance of supporting mental health in the workplace

Wed, April 27, 2022

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM EDT

While concerns around workplace mental health predate the pandemic, COVID-19 has, without question, exacerbated the problem. Mental health challenges can impact productivity and economic growth.

Half a million Canadians miss work each week due to mental health reasons, and absenteeism and presenteeism results in nearly $6 billion in lost productivity costs. Further, 1 in 10 Canadians have left or have considered leaving their job over a lack of mental health support. Building a healthier, more resilient, and inclusive workforce is a business imperative and a critical component of the province’s economic recovery.

Join the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and Sun Life for an engaging discussion with mental health experts and business leaders on their experience supporting employees’ mental health, particularly throughout the pandemic. In light of the provincial election in June, the session will also focus on the role of governments in working with employers to help workers access the mental health supports they need when and where they need it.

Ontario Passes Legislation to Safeguard Movement of People and Goods at International Borders

Keeping Ontario Open for Business Act protecting workers, job creators and international trade relationships

The Ontario government passed the Keeping Ontario Open for Business Act, 2022, which will protect international border crossings from unlawful obstructions that disrupt the economy or interfere with public safety.

The legislation enables law enforcement to better protect international borders, international airports and other transportation infrastructure that is significant to international trade and shield the economy from future disruptions like the illegal blockade of Windsor’s Ambassador Bridge, which led to temporary factory closures, shift reductions and halted billions of dollars worth of trade.

Ontario Modernizing its Emergency Response System

Investment in 9-1-1 system will help emergency operators and dispatchers save more lives

NTO — The Ontario government is investing $208 million over three years to enhance the province’s 9-1-1 emergency response system.

The funding will enable significant technology and infrastructure upgrades to support the transition to a new 9-1-1 communications system know as Next Generation 9-1-1. Once fully implemented, the new system will make it easier to provide additional details about emergency situations such as video from the scene of an accident and to text 9-1-1 when requesting immediate help from police, fire or ambulance services. It will also give emergency operators and dispatchers the ability to identify the location of a call using GPS coordinates, resulting in a safer, faster and more informed emergency response.
