Ontario Helping More Young People Train for In-Demand Careers in Construction

New investments prioritizing skilled trades training for students, including underrepresented groups

The Ontario government is investing $3.5 million in province-wide training initiatives to help more students launch rewarding careers in the skilled trades. These projects, led by the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario (PBCTCO), will prepare nearly 2,000 young people for well-paying jobs in the construction industry, including a path to paid training and union-sponsored apprenticeships.

Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, announced this investment at the Finishing Trades Institute of Ontario, where he was joined by Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance, PBCTCO Business Manager Marc Arsenault and labour leaders from across Ontario. The PBCTCO brings together 12 leading construction unions with a province-wide membership of 150,000 workers.

“Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government has a Plan to Build. Whether it’s through the launch of our skilled trades career fairs or innovative projects like this, we’re preparing the next generation of young people for six-figure salaries in in-demand industries,” said Minister McNaughton. “We need all hands on deck to deliver our ambitious infrastructure plans, which is why we’re bringing labour, government and business together to build a stronger Ontario that leaves no one behind.”

The Funny Farm Freshly Cut Flowers

Amanda has always loved flowers and making arrangements for family and friends!

When Ian and Amanda moved to “the farm” in 2018 to be closer to the kids who lived in Sarnia, they affectionately started to call it the Funny Farm since there were always lots of funny things happening…with 4 kids you never know what is going to happen next!!!
During the pandemic, Amanda ended up working from home and embracing her entrepreneurial spirit, she started putting out some flower arrangements at the roadside for sale and enjoyed bringing smiles to people driving by! Very quickly the Funny Farm Flowers had a reputation for cute, affordable arrangements that are made with beautiful, fresh flowers that last a long time!
Over the next year, plans started to snowball and Ian and Amanda decided to plant a sunflower field and use some of the property to grow more flowers and expand the roadside market. In addition, Amanda met some wonderful local businesspeople who agreed to put her flowers in their stores (Parallel Junction in Bridgen and De Sena’s in Bright’s Grove) so that she could offer flowers year-round.
