What's New This Week - July 05, 2023

The Sarnia Lambton Chamber of Commerce contacted the Federal Bridge Authority on behalf of our members to inquire about the plan to keep traffic moving throughout the bridge rehabilitation project.   In addition to the information listed in the below news link, this information was shared with us:

• Traffic will be managed at the toll booths on both sides so that the flow of trucks and cars on the one bridge can be controlled.
• Canada Border Services Agency and US Customs and Border Protection have assured the Federal Bridge Authority that they will be providing adequate staffing to manage the traffic during the project.
• The bridge is expecting 75,000 less vehicles per month than the last time they were closed for a project in 2015, at which time they had one bridge going for five months.  The current project is scheduled for three months.  This is approximately 1200 less vehicles each way per day.
• In addition, both the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited have dedicate 24/7 traffic operation centers managing traffic that were not in place in 2015.
• These types of operations have been managed in the past and the only difference from when there was only one bridge is that there were many more vehicles in the late 1900’s.

Ontario Training 100 People for Millwright Careers

Workers can earn bigger paycheques building historic projects across southwestern Ontario

LAMBTON COUNTY - The Ontario government is investing over $364,000 to help 100 journeypersons and apprentices in Sarnia and southwestern Ontario upgrade their skills in millwrighting so they can earn bigger paycheques for themselves and their families. Led by Millwright Local 1592, the funding will also help businesses find the skilled workers they need to build and maintain the hospitals, schools, automotive plants, and other historic infrastructure investments coming to the region.

“When you have a career in the skilled trades, you have a career for life,” said Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “Working with our union partners, our government is proud to invest in innovative training programs to ensure hard-working men and women have the skills they need to land better jobs and help build our province.”

LAMBTON COUNTY – The governments of Canada and Ontario are investing more than $770,000 to bring reliable high-speed internet to 580 families, farms and businesses in Lambton County. The community of Lambton County also invested more than $2.5 million towards completion of this project.

“Providing reliable internet access is especially important for rural communities to prosper in our increasingly digital world,” said Peter Fragiskatos, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue and Member of Parliament for London North Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities. “Today’s announcement marks another milestone for homes, businesses, and farms in Lambton County that can now connect to essential online services and enjoy the additional economic opportunities made available through high-speed internet.”
